Country Guide: Working in the United Kingdom (2026 Update)

Empidia Hub Editorial Team May 28, 2026 10 min read

Please note: The UK's immigration rules changed significantly in 2025 and 2026. This guide reflects the rules in force as of May 2026. Always verify current requirements on the official UK government website before applying.

The United Kingdom remains one of the most aspirational destinations for Sri Lankan professionals, but it is important to understand that the UK work visa system is now heavily restricted. Following major reforms in July 2025 and January 2026, most trade and non-graduate roles no longer qualify for work visa sponsorship. This guide explains which Sri Lankan workers can realistically apply and what the requirements are.

The Skilled Worker Visa — Who Qualifies?

The Skilled Worker visa is the main route for overseas workers. However, since 22 July 2025, the eligibility criteria have become much stricter:

Skill Level Requirement

Your job must be skilled to RQF Level 6 or above — this is equivalent to a bachelor's degree level. Roles such as construction labourers, factory workers, drivers, domestic helpers, and hospitality staff (waiters, cleaners) do not meet this requirement and cannot be sponsored.

Roles that typically DO qualify:

  • Registered nurses and midwives (with valid nursing qualifications)
  • Doctors and medical specialists
  • Engineers (civil, mechanical, electrical, software)
  • IT professionals and cybersecurity specialists
  • Teachers and university lecturers
  • Architects and quantity surveyors
  • Scientists and research professionals
  • Chartered accountants and financial managers
  • Social workers

Salary Requirement

The minimum salary is £41,700 per year (approximately LKR 11.5 million) or the "going rate" for your specific occupation — whichever is higher. Some roles may qualify for lower thresholds under specific tradeable options:

CategoryMinimum SalaryConditions
Standard (most applicants)£41,700/yearRQF Level 6 role, full going rate
Health & Care — standard£31,300/yearEligible healthcare occupation
Health & Care — discountedFrom £25,000/yearNew entrants or specific health roles
New entrant (under 26)£33,400/yearMust meet new entrant criteria
Immigration Salary List£33,400/yearRole must be on the current ISL

Note: All salary figures are gross (before tax). The going rate for your specific occupation code may be higher than these thresholds.

English Language Requirement

Since 8 January 2026, you must demonstrate CEFR Level B2 English proficiency across all four components (reading, writing, speaking, listening). Accepted tests include IELTS for UKVI (minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent qualifications from English-medium institutions.

Other Requirements

  • A valid job offer from a UK employer with a Sponsor Licence
  • A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your employer
  • Proof of funds to support yourself upon arrival
  • Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate (required for Sri Lankan applicants)
  • Criminal record certificate (for certain occupations)

Health and Care Worker Visa — For Nursing Professionals

The Health and Care Worker visa is a subset of the Skilled Worker route designed for healthcare professionals. It offers reduced visa fees and faster processing.

Important changes since July 2025:

  • Care workers and senior care workers (SOC codes 6145, 6146) — new overseas applications are no longer accepted. This role is restricted to transitional cases and domestic recruitment only. If you are a care assistant or home carer without registered nurse qualifications, this route is not available to you.
  • Registered nurses (SOC code 2231) — still eligible. If you hold a valid nursing degree/diploma and are registered with the Sri Lanka Nursing Council, you may qualify under this route.
  • Other healthcare roles — Doctors, paramedics, medical radiographers, occupational therapists, and similar degree-level health professionals remain eligible.

Salary for Health and Care roles: From £25,000–£31,300/year depending on the specific role and your qualifications.

What About Construction, Hospitality, and Trade Workers?

Realistically, these roles no longer qualify for UK work visas. The combination of the RQF Level 6 skill requirement and the £41,700 salary threshold means that:

  • Construction workers, masons, carpenters — do not qualify
  • Factory and warehouse workers — do not qualify
  • Drivers (except HGV drivers in specific shortage cases) — do not qualify
  • Hospitality staff (waiters, cleaners, housekeeping) — do not qualify
  • Domestic workers — do not qualify
  • Security guards — do not qualify

If you are currently working in one of these fields, the UK is unfortunately not a viable work destination under current immigration rules. Consider alternatives such as South Korea (EPS), Romania, Poland, Israel, or Australia — all of which actively recruit Sri Lankan workers in these sectors.

Cost of Living and Working Conditions

Salary After Tax

UK salaries are subject to income tax and National Insurance:

Annual SalaryApproximate Monthly Take-Home
£25,000~£1,700
£31,300~£2,050
£41,700~£2,650

Take-home pay depends on tax code, pension contributions, and other deductions.

Cost of Living

The UK, particularly London, has a high cost of living:

ExpenseMonthly (Outside London)Monthly (London)
Rent (shared accommodation)£500–800£800–1,500
Food£200–300£250–400

Utilities & bills£150–250£200–300
Total (approximate)£950–1,500£1,400–2,400

NHS and Healthcare

All legal workers have access to the National Health Service (NHS). You will pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of your visa application — £1,035 per year for adults. This covers most medical treatments.

Worker Rights

UK employment law provides strong protections:

  • National Living Wage: £11.44/hour (age 21+)
  • Maximum 48-hour work week (with opt-out option)
  • 28 days paid annual leave minimum
  • Statutory sick pay and maternity/paternity leave
  • Protection against unfair dismissal (after 2 years)
  • Anti-discrimination laws

Path to Settlement

Currently, after 5 years on a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — permanent residency. After one year of ILR, you may apply for British citizenship.

Important: In April 2026, the UK government proposed extending the settlement qualifying period from 5 to 10 years under the "Earned Settlement" proposal. This is not yet law as of May 2026, but it is under active consideration. If implemented, it would affect future applicants. Monitor UK government announcements for updates.

The Sri Lankan Community in the UK

The UK has a well-established Sri Lankan diaspora, particularly in:

  • London — Harrow, Wembley, East Ham
  • Birmingham — Sparkhill, Small Heath
  • Manchester — Cheetham Hill
  • Leicester — Golden Mile area

Community organisations, temples (Buddhist and Hindu), churches, and cultural associations provide social support and help new arrivals settle in.
