Know Your Rights as a Foreign Worker

Empidia Hub Editorial Team Jan 12, 2026 7 min read

Every Sri Lankan worker heading abroad deserves to know their rights and protections. The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) and international labor conventions provide frameworks that safeguard your interests, but awareness is your first line of defense.

Contract Verification — Before departure, your employment contract must be registered with the SLBFE. This registration is your legal protection. Never accept a contract that hasn't been verified, and ensure the terms match what was verbally agreed upon.

Salary & Payment Rights — You are entitled to receive your agreed salary on time. Many countries have Wage Protection Systems that electronically track payments. If your salary is delayed or reduced without explanation, report it immediately.

Working Hours & Rest — International labor standards establish maximum working hours (typically 8 hours/day, 48 hours/week) and mandatory rest periods. Overtime must be compensated at premium rates as specified in your contract.

Passport & Document Rights — Your employer cannot confiscate your passport or personal documents. This practice is illegal in most destination countries. Keep your documents secure and accessible at all times.

Workplace Safety — You have the right to a safe working environment. Employers must provide necessary safety equipment, training, and insurance coverage. Report unsafe conditions without fear of retaliation.

Grievance Mechanisms — If your rights are violated, contact the Sri Lankan embassy or consulate in your host country. The SLBFE also has a 24-hour helpline for workers abroad. Document everything — keep records of payments, communications, and working conditions.

Insurance & Medical Care — Ensure you have valid medical insurance before departure. Many destination countries require employers to provide health coverage. Know what your policy covers and how to access medical care in an emergency.
