Working in Romania: Opportunities for Sri Lankan Workers

Empidia Hub Editorial Team Feb 18, 2026 7 min read

Romania has rapidly become one of the most promising European destinations for Sri Lankan workers. As a member of the European Union with a fast-growing economy, Romania offers competitive wages, a lower cost of living compared to Western Europe, and a welcoming environment for foreign workers.

Why Romania? — Romania faces significant labor shortages in construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and hospitality. The government has actively opened recruitment channels with countries like Sri Lanka to fill these gaps, creating thousands of legitimate work opportunities each year.

Visa & Work Permit — Sri Lankan workers need a long-stay visa (Type D) and a work permit arranged by the Romanian employer. The process is handled through the Romanian Immigration Office. Documents required include a valid passport, employment contract, medical certificate, and criminal background check. Processing typically takes 30-60 days.

Salary Expectations — Romania's minimum gross wage is RON 4,050/month (~€815) for January–June 2026, rising to RON 4,325 (~€870) from July 2026. Romania applies a two-step minimum wage schedule. Skilled workers in construction and manufacturing often earn €800-1,200/month. Overtime is compensated at 175% of the base rate. Salaries are subject to Romanian income tax (around 10%) and social contributions.

Cost of Living — Romania is one of the most affordable EU countries. Monthly expenses for food, transport, and personal needs typically range from €250-400 outside Bucharest. Many employers provide accommodation or a housing allowance, further reducing costs.

Language & Communication — Romanian is the official language, but English is widely spoken in urban areas and among younger generations. Learning basic Romanian phrases will greatly help with daily interactions and is appreciated by locals and employers.

Climate & Lifestyle — Romania has four distinct seasons with warm summers (25-35°C) and cold winters (-5 to 5°C). The country offers beautiful landscapes, rich history, and a vibrant cultural scene. Cities like Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Timișoara have active expat communities.

Worker Rights — As an EU member, Romania follows European labor standards. Workers are entitled to a maximum 40-hour work week, minimum 20 days annual leave, public holidays, and comprehensive health insurance. Labor inspections ensure compliance.

Path to Residency — Workers who complete their initial contract can often renew for additional years. After five years of legal residency, you may be eligible for long-term EU resident status, opening doors to live and work across the European Union.
